I need every boost I can to exercise. The summer is almost over now, the Olympics have come and gone, it’s time for an injection of inspiration (if like me, you need it) or maybe you just want to dance around cleaning your house (not that I do that).

Robyn – ‘Dancehall Queen’

We kick off the mixtape with electro-pop singer-songwriter Robyn. In 2010, the Swedish songstress wowed and delighted fans by releasing three albums chock-full of dance hits.

Currently on tour with Coldplay we’re hoping she’ll be back in the UK for a solo tour very soon. If you’re anything like me, this will be the perfect track to ease you into your workout and warm up.

Marina and The Diamonds – ‘Primadonna’

This Welsh cutie has gained a lot of success from her second album Electra Heart, this song was almost inescapable and yet I’m still playing it. Her new vintage inspired image has cemented this poptastic video as one of my favourite hits of 2012 (so far).

September will see Marina and The Diamond‘s tour come to the UK before ending the year in Europe. In the meantime you can get your sweat-on to this track, in full make up and a tutu, if you’re going for authenticity.

Florence + The Machine – ‘Kiss With A Fist’

Let me introduce this track by saying Florence Welch has the best discovery story: singing Motown covers in a nightclub toilet, drunk (although I may have said the same about Ian MacKaye and Henry Rollins not the Motown part. I’m not saying they haven’t done it, just that’s not how they got discovered). This is the first track I heard from the British sensation and the ever-changing line up of “The Machine”, needless to say I was hooked.

Domestic violence is nothing to laugh about but boy does it make a good song, just ask any Country star. The ethereal, fiery-headed beauty will be gracing the stages of Reading and Leeds Carling Weekender and Bestival 2012 later this summer before kicking off their American tour.

Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg – ‘California Gurls’

By now you may have noticed that I think women do the best of pop and nothing will rot your teeth as quickly as Katy Perry. This year has seen the star surpass her contemporaries by having the most number ones off one album since Michael Jackson.

The pop princess may not be playing in the UK in the immediate future but she has her very own film, Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D (3D!! Now she has made it). So get to the cinema and enjoy the music of a live tour without actually seeing anyone perform live.

LMFAO – ‘Sexy and I Know It’

The ultimate workout song. You know it’s true. It’s time to ramp up your energy and really burn some calories so you won’t have to exercise again for a little while. You can’t listen to this song without having fun.

If you missed their performance on UK TV, you have to check out the electro crunk duo’s performance on Jonathan Ross.

Willow Smith – ‘Whip My Hair’

The debut track from the young fashionista hit pop gold, with the dance moves to match. Shaking your head around may help keep you moving (or harm you if you haven’t warmed up correctly), it works for the Pump It Up workout DVD.

Gwen Stefani – ‘Bubble Pop Electric’

With No Doubt making a comeback it seems like the perfect time to dust off your back catalogue, including the sparkling eccentricities of this platinum-haired, long-legged superstar.

You may still hold a grudge about her move from the midriff baring punk of ‘Just a Girl’ to a pin posing pop sensation with her own army of harjuku girls. But it’s time to embrace both sides of the coin, as pop punk has itself come and gone (and good riddance). You can have it all my friends, all you have to do is sacrifice your values to the bubbley pop tarts.

M.I.A. – ‘Bucky Done Gun’

Baile funk aficionado, M.I.A. is best known for her track ‘Paper Planes’ though she has an amazing back catalogue of songs which alone could set the soundtrack to your workout. I’ve slotted one of my favourites in this playlist to pick you up, just as you begin to lag. You can do it kittens!

Rihanna feat. Jay-Z – ‘Talk That Talk’

This song is another filthy pop offering from Rihanna, propelling you on your last effort towards the cool down. It’s number one this week, given the ominous title of “number one with the least sales” in a very very long time. Enjoy.

fun. – feat. Janelle Monáe – ‘We Are Young’

To bring you home it has to be this year’s anthem. You can’t help but feel epic as you run/ride/dance/walk to glory while this is playing. For all you fans out there, fun. will start their UK tour in October.

Good luck and remember, enjoy yourself.

What songs get you pumped? Ever danced around your kitchen cleaning? Let me know.
